Language specific guidelines for German texts
Fraktur
Most older German texts have been printed in a Font called Fraktur. If you have difficulties reading Fraktur characters, please use the Fraktur tool.
Quotes
Change german lower and upper doublequotes to » and «, like »this«.
For xemacs latin-9-prefix use ~> and ~<, for MacOSX Shift-Opt-\ and Opt-\ and for that OTHER OS <Alt>+175 and <Alt>+174.
Hyphens
The hyphen to indicate a missing or implied element should be followed by a space, as in 'Hoch- oder Niedrigwasser'.
emdashes
If there are spaces around em-dashes in the original keep or add them if required.
Spaced Out Text (gesperrt)
Mark s p a c e d text as <g>...</g> (mnemonic: g for gaps)
Non-Fraktur Font (Antiqua) in Fraktur texts
Mark non-fraktur text as <f>...</f>. Be sure to use Latin double quotes, ", for Antiqua text rather then gulliments.
